I wanted to take a minute to share some details about my on-demand Navien heating system. The Navien is both my water heater and my boiler. What I love about the system is the space savings. I got rid of my big boiler and I got rid of my water heater. It really opened up my basement and created some additional closet space. The Navien is neatly mounted on the wall and looks really futuristic.

On the other hand, my wife isn't crazy about the Navien, because it takes the water a little bit longer to heat up, as opposed to a traditional water heater that uses the pilot light to constantly heat water. Since installing the Navien, we have seen cost savings; however, it requires being flushed out and cleaned every 1 to 2 years depending on how hard your water is.
So the cost savings is a wash, but I still recommend the Navien for the space savings, the fact that it runs efficiently, and for the fact that it is still relatively easy to maintain. Then again, I tried flushing out the system myself after watching a YouTube video, and apparently I did not do a very thorough job. According to my plumber, I almost flooded my basement!
If you're looking to get a similar system, don't do it yourself. Likewise, if you're looking to sell a home, don't do it yourself. Get a professional!
